RDF Organizes Medical Relief Camp at Charsadda
Islamabad: Rural Development Foundation of Pakistan (RDF) organized a two-day medical relief camp at Agra Payan, a marginal and severely flood affected poor area of Charsadda District.
It is pertinent to mention that this relief activity was carried out after an extensive survey of the area. The findings revealed that population of Agra Payan, was more vulnerable towards health hazards due to its geographical location and non-availability of necessary medical facilities. Keeping in view the seriousness of the issue, RDF immediately fielded its highly professional medical team in the area to effectively cater with the rapidly increasing serious health problems. The team comprised of two trained doctors and other paramedic staff.
During the two-day camp, RDF facilitated the population of Agra Payan with necessary medical check-ups along with distribution of free medicines. Over 300 patients were entertained during this moot, which included 66 males, 93 females and 133 children. Severe skin infections, viral conjunctivitis (eye infections) and anemia were commonly diagnosed diseases among adult males and females while majority of the children have been affected by serious attacks of Gastro Enteritis. It is noteworthy that usually the main cause of Anemia is undernourishment and decrease in access to food. There was another alarming revelation that chances of hypertension among previously healthy community were on rise primarily due to the post disaster trauma.
The RDF medical team, after identifying the aforementioned situation, strategically extended required medical support to the patients. At RDF medical camp, not only the treatments were carried out but the population was also provided with useful guidelines regarding preventive measures to be taken against serious health threats. Shaigan Pharmaceuticals (Pvt) Ltd also collaborated for this camp.
It may also be mentioned that RDF has been conducting continuous need assessments of the local population. These assessments suggested that concerted efforts are required to hit three main areas for the development of Agra Payan including establishment of permanent medical facility, up-gradation of educational services especially of girls school and most importantly focus should be given to the income generation. Keeping in view the gravity of the situation in Agra Payan and other surrounding villages, RDF after in-depth survey has decided to establish a Rehabilitation Center for flood victims aiming at sustainable rehabilitation and development of affected communities.
Today Internet is being used to establish social networks and promote vision and objectives of organizations including NGOs. This use of Internet not only helps the NGOs to keep them aligned with Global best practices to provide services under that respective vision and objectives but also helps other to locate particular NGO working under specific objectives. Fund raising by NGOs is another area of interests for use of Internet.
In Pakistan there is a growing need for NGOs to effectively use Internet for the promotion of their services and for networking not only at a country level but also at a global level. The Website of the NGOs helps to build a Window in cyber space, which is used by persons living abroad to access a particular NGO. There are millions of Pakistanis living abroad in different countries and they want to help all those NGOs financially who are operating in their villages but it is not possible for them to identify and reach those NGOs. Also at times number of International Organizations wants to identify NGOs working in a particular social sector in a country but currently there exists no such arrangements, which could help the International donors to access Pakistani NGOs working in their area of interest.
Rural Development Foundation is venturing into social sector services since 1978 and is focusing village-based committees for helping them in the areas of Health and Education. Pakistan Social Association (PSA) is also a Government registered NGO established in 1963 and providing versatile social services. Under project E-Village PSA is promoting the use of Information and Communication Technologies ICTs for providing better services in the areas of Health and Education etc.
Under a Joint Venture RDF and PSA have initiated a project to build capacity of NGOs, working in different areas to use Internet for promoting their objectives and services. Under this project it is also planned to establish a web-based portal of different NGOs working in Pakistan so that a collective web link could be established as a representative of Pakistani NGOs.
In this regard a One-Day Training Programme is being organized at RDF Headquarter Islamabad tentatively on 21st September 2010. This training programme would broadly cover the use of Internet by NGOs to promote their vision and objectives and also identify different techniques for fund raising, joining different social networks and to follow global based practices to manage NGOs in best possible manner.
To participate in the above training programme, which would be free of cost, Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) may nominate one or two persons (preferably one male and one fe male, as a number of gender related issues would also be discussed in the Training Programme, for the training programme before 5th September 2010.
